Likabali to Mechuka – Arunachal Pradesh’s Mirabilia Journey

Likabali to Mechuka – Arunachal Pradesh’s Mirabilia Journey

Under a two-hour drive from the Dibrugarh airport, Likabali makes for a convenient stop right across the mighty Brahmaputra. Located in the West Siang district which is also the state’s largest, the town is known best for Malinithan, a temple that finds mention in the Puranas and where Durga is the prime goddess that is worshipped. A historical site dating back to the 10th and 14th centuries AD, the Malinithan temple ruins indicate a granite structure built in the classical tradition of Orissa.

It’s singularity lies in the use of granite in a region that largely uses bricks, the former showing an early Aryan influence. Not only is the temple of architectural and historical value, but also of mythological value; this is where Krishna is believed to have stopped on his way from Bhismakanagar to Dwarka with his newly wedded wife Rukmini, to seek the blessings of Parvati, an incarnation of Durga.

Onwards from Likabali, Basgo is an easy three-hour journey. An unexplored gem this side of the state, the beauty of this hill hamlet and its cultural richness is often underrated. Part of the Lepa-Rada district, Basgo sits in the midst of rice and maize fields interspersed with pineapple, orange and kiwi orchards. Wander across these beautiful agricultural fields, or hike up to the 70-metre Hido Hidi waterfall and take in its ethereal beauty.

The best trail bound to bowl over nature lovers though, is the one that goes through the surreal Nguda Pokcho forest. This gorgeous jungle is a lush one, crisscrossed with streams and waterfalls, and makes for a memorable camping experience. For the intrepid wildlife explorer, a unique opportunity awaits at the intriguing caves in Padi, home to bat colonies. Home to the Galo tribe, Basar celebrates the Bascon festival which is popular with travellers.

Continue upwards for a couple of hours to re-enter West Siang, where you’ll hit ‘Orange Country’ Aalo, formerly also known as Aalong. This beautiful valley is at the confluence of the Sipu and Siyom rivers, and flooded with orange plantations. The relatively big town has man-made sights like the Ramakrishna mission campus, Tatum bridge, and the Donyi Polo temple, but it is the abundance of scenic landscapes that this stretch is all about.

Once again home to the Galo tribe, the nearby villages of Jirdin, Kabu and Kayi add an interesting cultural context to the exploration. Finish it off with the thrill of walking the bamboo and cane bridge across the Siyom, or go rafting on its challenging waters.

From Aalo, the last and the longest leg of the journey begins, but not without its rewards. The five-hour plus drive takes you to the star attraction of the trail, Mechuka, that has long been sought by admirers of nature in its pristine form.

At 6,000 feet, Mechuka sits close to the Indo-Tibetan border, and is revered by both travellers and locals alike. Also known as Menchuka, it can be split into three syllables, wherein ‘men’ means “medicinal”, ‘chu’ means ‘water’ and ‘kha’ means ‘ice’ in the local language. The melted glacial waters that flow through Menchuka are believed to contain medicinal properties, making them sacred for local inhabitants, including the Adi, Bokar, Bemba and Liao tribes.

The Membas reside in quaint wooden homes, staying in one of which with a family and enjoying a traditional tribal meal, can provide an astounding cultural experience. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and the Siyom river flowing through Mechuka, it looks nothing less than a painting.

While natural beauty is the biggest draw of Mechuka, the place doubles as a hub for seekers of adventure. Go hiking on its many, lesser trodden paths, and birding through its verdant forests. Hit the rapids of the Siang on a raft or a kayak, or walk across the bamboo bridge that straddles the river, and drive across the Bhogibeel bridge across the Brahmaputra. But most of all, unwind and soak in the remoteness, and savour the feeling of being disconnected from the daily humdrum of the planet.

Once you emerge from this trail, you will realise why choosing the road less travelled made all the difference.

Located at the heart of Agartala town, the Ujjayanta Palace stands as a majestic testament to the rulership of Radha Kishore Manikya, the 20th-century king of Tripura. Evidenced by its towering domes and other architectural wonders, the palace appears to draw inspiration from Mughal designs. While a significant part of the palace is open to the public, the annex attached to the main structure is currently inhabited by members of the royal lineage. Among its treasures, the palace boasts an ivory throne, a revered focal point during the annual Durga Puja celebration. On this occasion, the palace priests pay homage to the throne after conducting a ritual animal sacrifice in honor of the goddess. The ivory throne stands out as one of the prominent attractions in Agartala, encapsulating both regality and cultural significance.

Tripura Sundari temple

Situated 55 km from Agartala, the Tripura Sundari Temple, holds a special place among the 51 Shaktipeethas in India. It is believed to be the spot where Goddess Sati’s right foot fell during Lord Shiva’s cosmic dance of destruction. The temple, showcasing Bengali-hut style architecture with a conical dome, proudly stands on a hillock and houses two identical images of the deity. Goddess Kali, worshipped in the form of Soroshi, is the focal point of devotion. Annually, a Diwali mela near the temple attracts over two lakh pilgrims, emphasizing the religious significance of this sacred site.

Kamlasagar Kali temple

Perched on a hillock overlooking Kamala Sagar, Kamlasagar Kali Temple, or Kasba Kali Bari, is home to a sandstone idol of Mahishasurmardini (Goddess Kali). Notably, a shivling at the feet of Goddess Dasabhuja Durga adds to its uniqueness. Built by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in the 15th century and completed by local rulers in the 17th century, this temple, located 27 km from Agartala, draws thousands of pilgrims during various festivals. The serene Kamalasagar Lake nearby enhances the site’s beauty, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and family outings.

Administered by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the temple stands near the ruins of Maharaja Govinda Manikya’s palace from the 17th century.

Sepahijala wildlife sanctuary

Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary, a haven of nature, offers joy through its diverse wildlife, encompassing avifauna and fauna. The only peculiarity you’ll encounter is the entry fee system, which requires payment twice – first to enter the sanctuary and then at another gate for direct access to the zoo. The expansive area typically takes 2 to 3 hours to explore, adorned with deciduous trees throughout. Get ready to observe leopards, lions, Himalayan mountain bears, pig-tailed macaques, and other creatures freely roaming the reserve.

Unakoti

Located around 170 km or a five-hour drive from Agartala, Unakoti is an ancient site with a fascinating legend behind its name. Translating to ‘a number less than a crore,’ the site is associated with a tale from ages past. According to legends, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati rested at Unakoti during their journey to the Himalayas. The skilled sculptor Kallu Kumhar, wishing to accompany them, faced a challenge set by Shiva. He had to sculpt crore images of the deities before sunrise. Despite his efforts, Kallu fell short of completing the last image, and Shiva and Parvati continued their journey, leaving behind immortal sculptures. To visit this site, visitors must ascend hundreds of steps carved into the hill. It is advisable to start the climb early morning.

Agartala, with its rich history, diverse culture, and picturesque landscapes, beckons travelers seeking an offbeat destination in Northeast India. From exploring historical palaces to religious gems, Agartala offers a unique and immersive travel experience. So, pack your bags, embark on this journey, and let Agartala weave its enchanting tale of heritage and hospitality.

These efforts will be further supported by the Eat Right initiative of FSSAI, which promotes safe, healthy, and sustainable dietary practices across communities.

  • Tuberculosis (TB): TB screening of vulnerable women, sputum collection, and mobile X-ray units will support early diagnosis. Patients will be linked to DOTS centres for treatment, while volunteers will be mobilised as Nikshay Mitras to provide nutrition and psychosocial support.

Mother and Child Protection (MCP) card distribution, counselling on safe pregnancy and institutional deliveries, growth monitoring of children, Infant and Young Child Feeding counselling, and immunisation services will further strengthen maternal and child health outcomes.

  • Blood Donation: Nationwide blood donation drives will be organised to strengthen trauma care, surgeries, and treatment of blood disorders. Donors will be registered on the e-Raktkosh portal (https://eraktkosh.mohfw.gov.in) and pledge campaigns will be run through MyGov (www.mygov.in).

  • Mobilisation of Youth and Citizens: The Abhiyaan will place special emphasis on engaging India’s youth and communities in this Jan Bhagidari effort. MY Bharat volunteers will be actively involved in awareness campaigns, health pledges, cultural activities, and community mobilisation drives. Citizens will also be encouraged to participate in pledges for voluntary blood and organ donation through the MyGov portal (www.mygov.in), and to register as Nikshay Mitras on the dedicated platform (www.nikshay.in) to support TB patients with nutrition, counselling, and care.
